The Dong Thap province held a ceremony on December 26 to receive the Prime Minister’s certificate recognising the ‘Go Thap’ archaeological and architectural site as a Special National Relic.
Covering in the centre of the Dong Thap Muoi area in My Hoa and Tan Kieu communes, Thap Muoi district, the Go Thap site is strongly connected to the Oc Eo Culture, the ancient material culture of the Mekong Delta region, dating back 1,500.
The archeologists found a number of artifacts of the culture relating to the residence, burial and architectural relics of the Oc Eo Culture at the site.
The Go Thap site was an important revolutionary base during the two Vietnam’s resistance wars against France and the US. It is also a home to long-standing religious institutions and activities and beliefs.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman of the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee, Le Minh Hoan, affirmed that recoginsing the Go Thap archaeological site as a Special National Relic, will provide much needed added value to the strategy for tourism development in Dong Thap in general and in Go Thap in particular.
The site, acknowledged as a national relic in 1998, is the first historical relic in Dong Thap province recognised as a special national relic.
